By nature, humans are social creatures. One may deny that claim but one cannot live without meaningful contact with other persons, at least one person.

The Human Need for Other Human Beings

Even when a person comes into the world, it is through a social context, namely, the sexual communion of two persons, man and woman. A single, solitary human existence is contrary to the way human beings are designed.

This is why the English poet John Donne (Meditation 17 or “No Man is an Island”) says, ”No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”
