Organizational design has been under significant analysis for years. The complexity created by the combination of goals, formal and informal structures, technology and the environment make determining the optimal organizational paradigm difficult at best. Nevertheless, there are predominant organizational paradigms that stand out when analysts seek to explain organizational behavior and standards. One such paradigm is the rational system.
The rational system approach is a traditional organizational philosophy focused on goal attainment as the organization’s purpose. In this type of organizational system, formality is implied and behavior within the organization is created because of the limitations that are predefined (Scott and Davis, 2007).
Formalized Processes
The formalization that exists in the rational structure leads to the reasoning behind the behavior of the individuals. Formalization then can be viewed as an attempt to predict behavior by regulating it. From the rational system perspective, the structure that exists in an organization can be used to improve performance.
